A SIMPLE TRANSMITTER

Figure 6-4 is a block diagram of a simple modulated-light voice transmitter that can be built for a few dollars using parts available from electronics supply houses. This circuit uses a microphone, an audio amplifier, a transformer, a current-limiting resistor, an LED, and a source of direct-current (DC) power such as a battery. Complete audio amplifier modules are sold in some hobby stores for reasonable prices. Alternatively, a simple audio amplifier circuit can be built using a rugged bipolar transistor or operational amplifier (“op amp”) chip. Ideally, the module or amplifier should have a built-in gain control.
